Acquisition, circulation and transmission of begomoviruses by their whitefly vectors

چکیده
Some geminiviruses are transmitted by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci in a circulative manner. These geminiviruses are assigned to the genus Begomovirus within the family Geminiviridae. The route followed by begomoviruses in their insect vector and the velocity of translocation of the various viruses seem to be intrinsic to the whitefly, not to the virus. Subsequent to ingestion during feeding on an infected plant, viruses are first associated with the stylet food canal and then to the proximal part of the descending Correspondence/Reprint request: Dr. Henryk Czosnek, The Robert H. The circulative pathway of begomoviruses in the whitefly vector Bemisia tabaci - insights from studies with Tomato yellow leaf curl virus
Our current knowledge concerning the transmission of begomoviruses by the whitefly vector Bemisia tabaci is based mainly on research performed on the Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) complex and on a number of viruses originating from the Old World, such as Tomato leaf curl virus, and from the New World, including Abutilon mosaic virus, Tomato mottle virus, and Squash leaf curl virus. In t...
متن کاملVector development and vitellogenin determine the transovarial transmission of begomoviruses.
The majority of plant viruses are transmitted by insect vectors between hosts, and transovarial transmission of viruses from vector parents to offspring has great significance to their epidemiology. Begomoviruses are transmitted by the whitefly Bemisia tabaci in a circulative manner and are maintained through a plant-insect-plant cycle. Other routes of begomovirus transmission are not clearly k...
متن کاملAn Invasive Whitefly Feeding on a Virus-Infected Plant Increased Its Egg Production and Realized Fecundity
BACKGROUND Plant-pathogenic begomoviruses have a complex association with their insect vectors. The interactions of begomoviruses and reproduction of their vectors are poorly understood. Bemisia tabaci is known to transmit many begomoviruses, and the spread of B. tabaci, especially the B and Q 'biotypes', has been accompanied by the epidemics of begomoviruses. One of these identified disease-ca...
متن کاملIntracellular trafficking of begomoviruses in the midgut cells of their insect vector
Begomoviruses are exclusively transmitted by whiteflies in a persistent circulative manner and cause considerable economic losses to crop production worldwide. Previous studies have shown that begomoviruses accumulate in vesicle-like structures in whitefly midgut cells and that clathrin-mediated endocytosis is responsible for their internalization. However, the process by which begomoviruses ar...
متن کاملDevelopment of a continuous whitefly cell line [Homoptera: Aleryrodidae: Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius)] for the study of begomovirus.
The whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) is a widely distributed pest of many important food and fiber crops. This whitefly is also a vector of more than 70 plant-infecting viruses. A cell line was established in vitro using embryonic tissues from the eggs of Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius), B biotype (pseudonym B. argentifolii Bellows & Perring), and referred to as 'Btb(Ba)97, Hunter-Polston'. Cell ...
